According to PCB sources, "Rashid is just one of the options at this stage along with middle order batsman Younis Khan."

PCB chief Shahryar Khan, however, chose to stay noncommittal on the move.

"I have gone on record saying that Inzamam-ul Haq is the captain. At this stage I won''t add anything to that as it will be detrimental to the team in Australia," he said.

Rashid, the original whistle-blower in the betting and match-fixing in cricket, was quietly hopeful of an unprecedented comeback.

"I''ve just heard from some that I can comeback as Pakistan captain. But nothing official from the PCB," he said from Karachi.

He last played for Pakistan in a One-day game against South Africa in October, 2003. Since then he and the PCB have had a love-hate relationship.

A senior official also said that in the event of Rashid leading the team someone like Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal or Younis Khan could be appointed his deputy.

Sources claimed that Khan and national selectors are miffed with Inzamam who they felt was uninspiring as captain.

"He has been completely unimaginative. The allegations of rape (on an unnamed Pak player in Australia) haven''t helped either," said one selector who wanted to remain anonymous.

"He has not been fielding certain players while promoting others who haven''t done well. The batting order they are persisting with has players like Shahid Afridi. Mahmood coming so late in the order. It''s unthinkable."

Even Inzamam has shown signs of cracking up. He reportedly said in Australia that he was unsure of his future as captain.

"I am uncertain about it. I''m not feeling inside and I''m not sure whether it (captaincy) is something I want to keep doing."

Even former Pakistan captain Imran Khan, an avid Inzamam fan, has called for his head after what he called a "spineless" show in Australia. He also supports Younis as captain.
